FC Halifax Town will return home with a point after a goalless draw against Torquay United on Tuesday night.

The Shaymen made the long journey south in their furthest fixture of the season in a bottom table clash. Coming off the back of a thrilling 4-2 victory in the first leg of the FA Trophy semi-finals against Nantwich Town, the Shaymen were keen to get back to league business.

Two points separated the two sides ahead of the fixture as both teams looked to secure their safety in the league. Jim Harvey made just one change to the team from the weekendโ€™s victory as Richard Peniket earnt his way into the staring eleven.

It was largely a game of few chances for both sides as they struggled to find the back of the net. Town came the closest just before the half time break as the Shaymenโ€™s top goal scorer, Jordan Burrows found himself with the ball in front of the net after multiple deflections, but his shot was sent wide of the post.

Torquay upped the pressure in the second half peppering Townโ€™s defence, but they were unable to beat Sam Johnson to his post.

It was a first half that deemed unsuccessful for both sides as Town struggled to get the ball forward to create any clear cut chances. Richard Peniket, who found himself back in the side was quick to get the game going, beating his man down the wing, but he was unable to keep up with his touch, sending the ball out for the first throw in of the game.

Skipper Nicky Wroe was given a stern talking to by the referee with less than 10 minutes on the clock after lunging into a tackle with a Torquay defender. However, his actions were luckily not enough to lend himself with a yellow card.

A deep ball into the box by the Gulls caused havoc for the Shaymen as they scrambled to clear it away, but their efforts were saved by the linesmanโ€™s flag as he signalled for offside. Johnson then sent a long ball up front, picking out Peniket who set up Scott McManus on the edge of the area, but his cross into the box was well dealt with the Torquay defence who were quick to clear it.

The Gulls hit back on the break, causing Johnson, a real problem. Harrad make the run to close to down the Shaymen keeper who drilled the ball straight out to the opposition but luckily for him, their shot bounced up and onto the top of the net.

The Shaymen had to hold their breathโ€™s once more a few minutes later as a Torquayโ€™s initial shot hit the woodwork and was headed back across the face of the goal but there were no home side players to finish the chance.

On the half hour mark, Peniket was able to make the run down the centre and fire a powerful shot to send Moore diving to the ground, as he just managed to palm it away. The Shaymen were inching closer minute by minute as they powered through. A cross from the right in Torquayโ€™s box was subject to a few deflections before finding the feet of Jordan Burrow who didnโ€™t have time to direct his shot, sending it wide.

The second half saw the home side ramp up the pressure, causing quite a few problems for Townโ€™s defence. Johnson was subject to multiple shots as five Torquay players continue to hit the rebound before Toby Ajala had his chance, which luckily for Johnson was sent massively wide.

It was a half that saw a lot of ping pong football, with neither side creating any clear cut chances until the dying minutes of extra time. Torquay made a final push through Ajala who was delivered a pin point cross, but number one choice keeper, Johnson was able to make himself big enough to pull off a cracking save and deny the Gulls a last minute goal.

FC Halifax Town will now look towards this Saturday where the Shaymen will host Nantwich Town for the second leg of the FA Trophy semi-finals with the ultimate goal of a final match at Wembley. So make you show your support and be the 12th man.
